MUMBAI – Increased arrivals pulled down wheat prices in Kota market in Rajasthan on Wednesday, traders said. Meanwhile, maize prices fell marginally at Davanagere in Karnataka, and rice remained unchanged in key spot markets across the country, they said.

Prices of WHEAT in Kota fell by INR 30 to INR 2,520 per 100 kilograms, on the back of increased arrivals, local trader Aniket Mehta said. Arrivals in Kota rose to 8,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) from 5,000 bags on Tuesday, he said. However, wheat prices at the Vashi market in Navi Mumbai were steady at INR 2,800-INR 2,825 per 100 kg amid a lack of fresh cues, wholesale trader Devendra Vora said. He expects prices to remain largely flat in the near term.

Prices of MAIZE in Davanagere fell marginally by INR 30 to INR 2,220 per 100 kg, local trader Shiva Kumar saidThough prices fell, "the market is mostly steady as the drop in prices is marginal," he said. The price movement was narrow as the imapct of low arrivals were largely offset by weak demand.

Buyers are holding their bulk purchases as they anticipate a further fall in prices as new crop arrivals pick up pace. In addition, the new crop arrivals are moisture-laden, weighing on prices. Prices of new crop fell by INR 100 to INR 1,500 per 100 kg, as it contains high 25–30% moisture, compared with the acceptable moisture level of 14%, he said.

On Wednesday, old crop arrivals were 50–100 bags  (1 bag = 60 kg), while that of the new crop rose to 1,000 bags.

Prices of all major RICE varieties across key markets were unchanged amid a lack of fresh cues. Basmati rice varieties, 1401 and 1121, were unchanged at INR 7,500-INR 7,600 per 100 kg and INR 8,000-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, respectively, Vora said.

The price of sona masoori rice, a premium non-basmati rice, also remained unchanged at INR 5,000 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Andhra Pradesh's Vijayawada, local trader Ravi Shankar said. Prices are expected to remain unchanged till November, he said. The price of 5% broken rice in Vashi was unchanged at INR 3,150 per 100 kg, Vora said.

Meanwhile, rice procurement has struggled to gain momentum in the 2025-26 kharif marketing season (Oct-Sept) due to lower purchases by Punjab amid heavy rains. This is despite key states starting rice purchases early this year. Tamil Nadu advanced procurement operations this season by a month and Punjab by a fortnight, against the typical start of Oct. 1.

However, the Food Corp. of India and state agencies have only procured 1.49 million tonnes of rice as of Monday, accounting for 3.2% of the 46.35 million tonnes target for the 2025-26 season, FCI data showed.  End
