MUMBAI – Futures contracts turmeric and jeera rose, while those of coriander fell on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Wednesday. Prices of turmeric rose due to a rise in festival demand, while prices of jeera were up due to short-covering, analysts said. Prices of coriander fell due to weak demand in spot markets, they said.
The most-active October contract of TURMERIC was up 1.4% at INR 11,954 per 100 kg as demand for the spice picked up ahead of festivals, though it has not increased "upto the mark so far", analysts at SMC Global Securities said. In the absence of a substantial rise in festival demand, the rise in prices could be short-lived, they said.
Though there are concerns about crop damage due to heavy rainfall in some regions of south India, the extent of the damage is not known yet, SMC Global said. The market is closely monitoring weather conditions across south India, the brokerage said. For October, the India Meteorological Department has forecast above-normal rainfall for the country at 115% of the long-period average. Most parts of India are likely to receive normal to above-normal rainfall during October, the weather department said.
The most-active November contract of JEERA rose 0.8% to INR 19,380 per 100 kg on short-covering after prices had fallen continuously in the last few days, analysts said. However, the rise in prices is likely to be limited as market sentiment is still weighed down by muted demand, rising arrivals, and ample availability of stocks, SMC Global said. Between 300,000 and 400,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) of the spice are expected to be traded by the end of the season, leaving substantial carry-forward stocks of around 1.6 million bags, Kedia Advisory said in a statement.
The most-active November contract of CORIANDER was down 1.2% at INR 8,500 per 100 kg due to subdued demand in spot markets, analysts said. Though festival demand could lend some support to prices in the near term, a steep rise in prices is unlikely due to the continuous flow of higher arrivals in key spot markets, SMC Global said.
