MUMBAI – Prices of chana rose, while prices of urad were steady and tur prices were mixed in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Prices of chana continued to rise on the back of festival demand ahead of Diwali, they said. Prices of tur were steady in some markets, while they rose in others as millers kept stocking up on the legume, they said. Prices of urad were steady as demand for the legume was on par with its supply, they said.
CHANA prices in Kota, Rajasthan, rose by INR 25 from Tuesday to INR 4,800-INR 5,300 per 100 kg, said Aniket Mehta, a local trader. Prices were supported by a rise in demand ahead of Diwali, he said. Prices are likely to rise further by INR 300 per 100 kg until the festival on Oct. 20, he said.
Prices of chana usually surge during this time of the year as demand for chana dal, or processed chana, and besan, a flour made from the legume, picks up for making sweets and snacks. However, the availability of imports from Australia is preventing a steep rise in prices this year, Mehta said. Chana from Australia, which will begin arriving into the country from mid-October, is cheaper and of better quality than the domestic variety.
Prices of chana in Delhi also rose by INR 25 from the previous day to INR 5,950-INR 5,975 per 100 kg, traders said.
TUR prices in Akola, Maharashtra, rose by INR 50 from Tuesday to INR 7,100-INR 7,150 per 100 kg, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. Millers continued to make purchases to stock up on the legume, supporting prices, he said. Prices are also supported by festival demand, he said. Though the festival demand for tur does not rise as much as chana, the positive sentiment across all pulses markets supports prices, he explained.
Prices of tur are expected to rise further in the near term due to reports of crop damage amid heavy rainfall in Marathwada in Maharashtra and Karnataka, though the extent of losses is still uncertain, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly report on Monday.
Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 7,200-INR 7,300 per 100 kg, according to the association.
URAD prices in Chandausi, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 7,150-INR 7,200 per 100 kg, traders said. Prices of urad in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, were also steady at INR 7,3000 per 100 kg. Prices were steady as demand for the legume matched its supply, traders said.
Prices of urad are expected to remain range-bound with a downward bias amid ongoing imports, rising mandi arrivals, and need-based mill demand, the association said. A steep fall in prices is unlikely as arrivals across the country are likely to fall in the medium term. The fall in prices could also be capped as millers are currently focused on stocking up their processing pipeline, it said. End
