NEW DELHI – Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan Tuesday chaired a high-level meeting to address the challenges of stubble burning and air pollution in northern India. The meeting was attended by Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav and agriculture ministers from Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi, according to an official release.

The meeting focused on strategies to curb stubble burning, the better utilisation of paddy residue, promoting awareness, and crop diversification among farmers, the release said.

At the meeting, state agriculture ministers detailed the ongoing efforts they are taking and assured the Centre that stubble burning management schemes are being implemented diligently. Haryana reported notable success in motivating farmers to adopt sustainable alternatives through financial aid, the release said. Chouhan called for active grassroots engagement by panchayats, local officials, and nodal officers to strengthen outreach, while advocating direct wheat sowing and the use of machinery and bio-decomposers for residue management.

Stubble burning is a method of removing paddy crop residues from the field to prepare it for sowing wheat from the last week of September to November by setting the straw stubble, left after harvesting grains, on fire. It is usually done in areas that use the combined harvesting method, which leaves crop residue behind. The burning of farm residue is one of the major causes of air pollution in parts of northern India, including the National Capital Region, and has been a cause of concern over the years.  End
