MUMBAI – Futures contracts of all the three spices fell on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Tuesday. Prices of turmeric were down as demand for the spice remained low while weak market sentiment weighed on prices of jeera, analysts said. Prices of coriander fell due to profit-booking, though the fall is likely to be limited as festival demand is seen increasing, they said.
The most-active October contract of TURMERIC was down 0.6% at INR 11,712 per 100 kg as demand remained muted, analysts at SMC Global Securities said. Though the fall in prices could be supported by reports of crop losses in key producing regions, the extent of damage is still not known, they said. Heavy rainfall has damaged the standing turmeric crop in parts of Maharashtra and southern India, though it could take a few more days to assess the extent of crop loss, the brokerage said.
Prices could also be supported by festival demand in the near term. But a steep rise in prices is unlikely as "a broad-based demand recovery is still lacking," SMC Global said.
The most-active November contract of JEERA fell 0.3% to INR 19,140 per 100 kg as market sentiment continues to be weighed down by the availability of ample supply and weak demand. Foreign buyers remained largely inactive, while the domestic market currently has comfortable supplies, Kedia Advisory said in a note. About 300,000–400,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) of the spice are expected to be traded by the season's end, leaving a sizeable carry-forward stock of around 1.6 million bags, they said.
The most-active November contract of CORIANDER was down 0.7% at INR 8,552 per 100 kg due to profit-booking as prices rose beyond the INR 8,700 per 100 kg mark after one month, analysts said. However, the fall in prices is likely to be limited as festival demand is expected to pick up shortly, SMC Global said.
