Gujarat kharif acreage steady on year at 8.45 mln ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – The area under kharif crops in Gujarat was 8.45 million hectares as of Monday, steady compared to a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Of the state's normal kharif crop acreage of 8.56 million hectares, which is the average of the past three years, nearly 99% has been covered so far.

 

Under major cereal crops, paddy acreage rose to 904,298 hectares from 886,779 hectares a year ago, the report said. The area under maize fell to 280,976 hectares from 286,060 hectares, while the area under bajra rose to 172,588 hectares from 168,310 hectares. 

 

Among pulses, acreage of tur rose to 305,572 hectares from 238,571 hectares a year ago, the report said. Moong acreage fell to 48,912 hectares from 55,217 hectares. The area under urad was largely steady at 83,730 hectares. The total area under pulses rose to 460,479 hectares from 400,959 hectares a year ago. 

 

The area under groundnut rose to 2.20 million hectares from 1.91 million hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area under sesame fell to 41,005 hectares from 49,441 hectares. Castor acreage rose to 673,295 hectares from 635,227 hectares a year ago. The area under soybean fell to 277,588 hectares from 300,770 hectares a year ago. The total area under oilseeds rose to 3.19 million hectares from 2.89 million hectares. 

 

Cotton acreage fell to 2.08 million hectares from 2.37 million hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area under vegetables rose to 267,025 hectares from 266,943 hectares. 

 

Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. From Jun. 1 to Sept. 30, Gujarat recorded 891.2 millimetres of rainfall, 25% above the normal for the period, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. During Oct. 1–6, the state received 20.1 millimetres of rainfall, 183% above the normal for the period.  End
