MUMBAI – Futures contracts of turmeric and jeera fell, while those of coriander rose on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Friday. Prices of turmeric and jeera fell due to weak demand, analysts said. Prices of coriander rose due to a drop in arrivals in key supply centres, they said. Prices of coriander are likely to rise further on the back of festival demand, they added.

The most-active October contract of TURMERIC was down 1.7% at INR 11,770 per 100 kilograms as buying interest remained muted despite reports of crop losses in key producing regions, analysts at SMC Global said. Heavy rainfall has damaged the standing turmeric crop in parts of Maharashtra and south India, though it could take a few more days to assess the extent of crop loss, the brokerage said. Though the fall in prices could be limited due to festival demand in the near term, it is likely to be temporary, the brokerage said.

The most-active November contract of JEERA fell 0.1% to INR 18,915 per 100 kg as weak domestic and export demand continued to weigh on prices post the retail season, Kedia Advisory said in a note. Foreign buyers remained largely inactive, while the domestic market currently has comfortable supplies, they said. About 300,000–400,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) of the spice are expected to be traded by the season's end, leaving a sizeable carry-forward stock of around 1.6 million bags, they said.

The most-active November contract of CORIANDER was up 1.9% at INR 8,608 per 100 kg due to a decline in local arrivals at key supply centres, SMC Global said. Though festival demand could support prices further in the near term, the market is likely to adopt a cautious stance as a further rise in prices could encourage stockists to offload their stocks, the brokerage said.
