MUMBAI – Futures contracts of turmeric and jeera fell, and those of coriander rose on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Friday. Prices of turmeric and jeera fell due to muted demand, although concerns about damaged crops resulting from heavy rainfall could support turmeric prices in the near term, analysts said. Prices of coriander rose, tracking firm demand in spot markets, they said.

The most-active October contract of TURMERIC was down 0.6% at INR 11,950 per 100 kilograms due to subdued demand in spot markets, analysts at SMC Global Securities said. However, the fall in prices could be limited due to rising concerns about crop losses in Maharashtra and parts of southern India. Heavy rainfall in these regions has damaged the standing turmeric crop, brokerage said. It could take another 7–10 days to assess the damage, it said. Prices could also be supported due to a rise in festival demand in the near term, the brokerage said.

The most-active October contract of JEERA fell nearly 0.2% to INR 18,915 per 100 kg due to weak demand, a rise in arrivals in spot markets, and sufficient availability of stock, SMC Global said. Market sentiment remains weak due to the abundance of supply, they said. About 300,000–400,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) of the spice are expected to be traded by the season's end, leaving a sizeable carry-forward stock of around 1.6 million bags, Kedia Advisory said.

The most-active November contract of CORIANDER was up 0.6% at INR 8,460 per 100 kg due to a firm trend in the spot markets and restricted supplies from key-producing regions, market analysts said. The market is keeping an eye out for festival demand, which could support prices, SMC Global said.
