Andhra kharif area tad down on year at 2.78 mln ha as of Wed

MUMBAI – Kharif crops were sown across 2.78 million hectares in Andhra Pradesh as of Wednesday, down marginally from 2.79 million hectares in the same period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The state's targeted area for the season is 3.45 million hectares, of which over 80% has been covered so far.
The area sown under paddy rose to 1.51 million hectares, up from 1.39 million hectares a year ago, as per the report, while the acreage for maize was up at 176,000 hectares from 143,000 hectares last year. The total area sown under coarse grains was 235,000 hectares, up from 222,000 hectares a year ago, the report showed.
According to the report, the total area sown under pulses was down at 327,000 hectares from 408,000 hectares a year ago. The on-year acreage for tur fell to 292,000 hectares from 360,000 hectares, and the area sown under moong stood at 5,000 hectares, down from 6,000 hectares reported last year during the same period. The on-year acreage of urad fell to 26,000 hectares from 34,000 hectares.
Meanwhile, the total area sown under oilseeds was down at 246,000 hectares from 340,000 hectares sown a year ago, as per the report. Groundnut acreage fell to 195,000 hectares from 288,000 hectares, and the area sown under soybean was the same as last year at 6,000 hectares.
The on-year cotton acreage rose to 440,000 hectares from 397,000 hectares, while sugarcane acreage was down at 14,000 hectares from 20,000 hectares reported in the previous year, the report showed. Tobacco acreage in the state fell to 5,000 hectares from 14,000 hectares a year ago, according to the report.
The water level in reservoirs across Andhra Pradesh was 763.29 thousand million cubic metres as of Wednesday, up from 738.4 thousand million cubic metres a year ago, the report said. End
