MUMBAI – India's edible oil imports in September are estimated at 1.60 million tonnes, marginally lower than in August due to a fall in palm oil imports. However, on an annual basis, total imports of edible oil are expected to have risen 51% last month, according to estimates by GGN Research accessed by Informist.

In August, the country had imported 1.61 million tonnes of edible oil, out of the total vegetable oil imports of 1.70 million tonnes, according to data from The Solvent Extractors' Association of India. In the first 10 months of the oil year 2024-25 (Nov-Oct), total vegetable oil imports were at 12.7 million tonnes, down 7% from 13.7 million tonnes a year ago, the association said.

India's palm oil imports are estimated to have plummeted 16% on month to 829,000 tonnes in September, according to GGN Research. But on year, imports of palm oil rose significantly by 57%, it said.

Soyoil imports, on the other hand, surged significantly by 37% on month and 31% on year to 503,000 tonnes, marking the second-highest monthly imports ever, it said. "Notably, India imported 11,000 tonnes of soybean oil from China during the month," said Rajesh Patel, managing partner at GGN research.

Sunflower oil imports in September are estimated to have increased 6% on month to 272,000 tonnes, the highest level in eight months. On a yearly basis, imports of sunflower oil rose 78%, according to the data.

As of Oct. 1, vessels carrying a total of 300,000 tonnes of edible oil are in line to arrive or discharge at Indian ports in the next few days. Of the total, 70,000 tonnes are palm oil, 170,000 tonnes soyoil, and 60,000 tonnes sunflower oil, according to GGN Research.

In September, Nepal's edible oils import through Indian ports totalled 35,000 tonnes – 19,000 tonnes of soyoil, 2,000 tonnes of palm oil and 14,000 tonnes sunflower oil, GGN Research said. "This marks the lowest monthly import in current oil year," it said. In August, Nepal had imported 88,000 tonnes of soyoil and 7,000 tonnes of palm oil, which totalled to 95,000 tonnes, through Indian ports, it added.  End
