MUMBAI – Prices of wheat, rice, and maize were steady in key spot markets across the country on Wednesday, traders said. Prices of wheat and maize in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, are expected to fall due to pressure from arrivals, they said. Grain markets in Karnataka are shut on Wednesday and Thursday on account of Dussehra.

Prices of WHEAT in Vahsi, Navi Mumbai, were unchanged at INR 2,800-INR 2,825 per 100 kilograms due to lack of fresh cues, wholesale trader Devendra Vora said. He expects prices to remain steady in the near term.

Prices of wheat in Kota, Rajasthan, were also steady at INR 2,525-INR 2,550 per 100 kg. Arrivals in Kota fell to 5,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) from 10,000 bags, as farmers kept away from the market due to Dussehra. "Everyone is engaged in cleaning (ahead of festivities)," he said.

Wheat prices in Indore were at INR 2,800 per 100 kg, local trader Gaurav Kochar said. Prices are likely to fall by INR 100 to INR 2,700 per 100 kg as arrivals are likely to increase with farmers tending to sell the grain before the sowing of rabi crops, he said. Also, "the area sown under wheat will increase," he said.

The government has raised the minimum support price of wheat for the rabi season to INR 2,585 per 100 kg from INR 2,425 per 100 kg.

Prices of MAIZE in Indore were at INR 2,000 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices are likely to fall by INR 100 to INR 1,900 per 100 kg as the new arrivals start, he said. Prices of maize from Karnataka were not available as markets in the state were closed on Wednesday on account of Dusshera.

Prices of the 1401 and 1121 varieties of basmati RICE were steady at INR 7,500-INR 7,600 per 100 kg and INR 8,000-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, respectively, due to lack of fresh cues, Vora said. The price of 5% broken rice in Vashi was unchanged at INR 3,150 per 100 kg, he said. The price of sona masoori rice, a premium non-basmati rice, remained unchanged at INR 5,000 per 100 kg in Bhavanipuram, Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, local trader Ravi Shankar said. He expects prices to remain largely steady till December.  End
