NEW DELHI – The Union Cabinet Wednesday approved a 4-10% hike in the minimum support price of six rabi crops for the marketing season starting April. The MSP hike will cost the government an additional INR 842.63 billion.
The minimum support price for wheat, a key rabi crop, was increased by INR 160 or 6.6% to INR 2,585 per 100 kg and that of chana, the largest rabi pulse, was raised by 4% or INR 225 to INR 5,875 per 100 kg. Wheat, the crucial rabi crop, accounts for over 70% of the rabi food grain output.
Wheat, being one of the key crops for India, has seen lucrative hikes year after year. The significant hike this year has come even as availability of stocks with both the industry and the government is higher. According to data from the Food Corp. of India, the central pool had 33.3 million tonnes of wheat stocks as of Sept. 1, up over 32% on year. The current wheat stocks are well above the buffer norm of 27.58 million tonnes--operational stock of 24.58 million tonnes and strategic reserve of 3.00 million tonnes. The industry had expected the minimum support price of wheat at INR 2,600 per 100 kilograms, according to discussions at the recent Wheat Summit held in Mumbai.
Meanwhile, the hike in chana prices is crucial as the centre is looking to increase its acreage and promote farmers to plant more of it.
The Cabinet also approved increasing the minimum support price of mustard by 4.2% or INR 250 to INR 6,200 per 100 kg and for masur by 4.5% or INR 300 to INR 7,000 per 100 kg.
The support price for barley has been increased by 8.6% or INR 170 to INR 2,150 per 100 kg while that of safflower has been raised by 10% or INR 600 to INR 6,540 per 100 kg.
Minimum support prices, the price at which the government buys crops from farmers in case market prices fall, gives security and direction to growers in terms of realisation of their produce.
The following table details the minimum support price of key rabi crops for the 2026-27 rabi marketing season, in INR per 100 kg, compared with the year-ago support prices, and the change in percentage terms.
