Maharashtra kharif area dn 1.4% on yr at 14.59 mln ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – The area under kharif crops in Maharashtra stood at 14.59 million hectares as of Monday, down nearly 1.4% from 14.79 million hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department.
The area under paddy was down at 1.515 million hectares compared to 1.521 million hectares a year ago, while maize acreage rose to 1.45 million hectares from 1.12 million hectares. The total area under all cereals in the state was up at 3.47 million hectares from 3.25 million hectares reported a year ago, as per the report.
Tur acreage rose slightly to 1.23 million hectares from 1.22 million hectares a year ago, while the area under urad fell to 377,911 hectares from 389,166 hectares. The area under all pulses was down at 1.88 million hectares from 1.92 million hectares a year ago.
Under oilseeds, the total area fell to 5.12 million hectares from 5.33 million hectares a year ago, as per the report. Soybean acreage was down at 4.97 million hectares from 5.16 million hectares, and groundnut acreage was at 137,024 hectares, lower than 148,070 hectares a year ago.
The acreage of cotton slipped to 3.85 million hectares from 4.09 million hectares, while the area under sugarcane was up at 271,463 hectares from 205,934 hectares a year ago.
Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. From Jun. 1 to Sep. 30, Maharashtra received 1,189.4 millimetres of rainfall, 20% above the normal of 994.5 millimetres, according to the India Meteorological Department. As of Wednesday, the water level in dams of Maharashtra was at nearly 90% of their live storage capacity, up from over 87% a year ago, according to data from the state water resource department. End
