MUMBAI – Oilseed prices were mixed in key domestic markets across the country, traders said. Mustard prices in Rajasthan were down because of competition with lower-priced soybean. Groundnut prices remained unchanged while soybean prices fell because of cheap imports.

MUSTARD seed prices in Jaipur, Rajasthan, stood at INR 7,075-INR 7,100 per 100 kg, down INR 100 from the previous day, according to Marudhar Trading Agency. Arrivals of mustard seed across the country were at 235,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), down from 300,000 bags the previous day, according to GGN Research. Prices fell as demand from millers was poor despite the festival season, traders said. "Due to the low prices of competitive soybean and sunflower oils this year, demand for mustard has been hampered," Mahesh Sameriya, a local trader, said.

Mustard seed prices in Kota, also in Rajasthan, were steady at INR 6,551 per 100 kg, Sameriya said. Arrivals were at 7,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), up 2,000 bags from the previous day, he said. The seeding season for the new crop has begun, due to which traders are clearing out old inventory. This could further weigh on prices, he added. The new crop is expected to start arriving in markets by January, he said.

SOYBEAN prices in Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh fell INR 400 to INR 2,400-INR 4,600 per 100 kg, depending on variety, Narendra Porwal, a local trader, said. Arrivals were at 4,100 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), down from 8,800 bags the previous day. The prices of low-quality soybean seeds fell because of high moisture content caused by heavy rainfall in the state earlier in the month. The prices also fell as new arrivals flooded the market, he added.

"Soyoil markets across India are affected because of cheap Argentinian imports," Aniket Mehta, a trader from Kota, said. In the past few days, India has imported 500,000 tonnes of soyoil from Argentina, after that country temporarily suspended export duties on soybean and its by-products. As per market participants, the bulk import of soyoil from Argentina has resulted in reduced demand from millers and affected oilseed markets across the country.

In Gondal, Gujarat, soybean prices fell INR 100 to INR 3,600-INR 3,900 per 100 kg, Ashok Virvani, a local trader, said. Arrivals held steady at 114 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), same as the previous day, he added.

GROUNDNUT prices in Ratlam held steady at INR 4,200-INR 5,800 per 100 kg, Porwal said. Arrivals were at 2,700 bags, down from 4,600 bags the previous day, he added. Many mandis across the state are closed for Durga Ashtami, he added. In Gondal, prices of groundnut seeds fell INR 200 to INR 3,700-INR 5,200 per 100 kg, Virvani said. Arrivals were steady at 1,583 bags, he added.
