MUMBAI – Futures contracts of all three spices traded on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange fell Tuesday due to sluggish demand. Prices of jeera are expected to remain under pressure due to the availability of ample stocks. Prices of turmeric will likely find support in the near term due to rising concerns about crop loss due to heavy rainfall in key growing regions. Prices of coriander could rise in the medium term due to festival demand.

The most-active October contract of TURMERIC was down 1.3% at INR 12,252 per 100 kg due to weak demand, analysts at SMC Global Securities said. However, the fall in prices could be limited due to reports of crop damage in parts of Maharashtra and southern India due to heavy rainfall in the past few days, they said. The extent of damage is still unclear and it could take another 7–10 days to assess it, they said. In the near term, the market will keep an eye on weather developments over southern India, they said.

The most-active October contract of JEERA fell nearly 1% to INR 18,830 per 100 kg due to sluggish demand, rising arrivals, and sufficient availability of stock, SMC Global said. Market sentiment remains weak due to the availability of abundant supply, they said. About 300,000–400,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) of the spice are expected to be traded by the season's end, leaving a sizeable carry-forward stock of around 1.6 million bags, Kedia Advisory said in a statement.

The most-active October contract of CORIANDER was down 0.1% at INR 8,266 per 100 kg as buying interest remained subdued despite a fall in arrivals in major supply centres, SMC Global said. "Both domestic players and exporters are adopting a cautious stance at present," the brokerage said. However, prices could be supported in the medium term due to a rise in festival demand, they said.
