Gujarat kharif acreage steady on year at 8.42 mln ha as of Monday

MUMBAI – The acreage under kharif crops in Gujarat was nearly 8.42 million hectares as of Monday, largely steady from 8.41 million hectares sown a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Of the state's normal kharif crop acreage of 8.56 million hectares, which is the average of the past three years, over 98% has been covered so far.
Under major cereal crops, paddy acreage rose to 903,501 hectares from 886,845 hectares a year ago, the report said. The area sown under maize fell to 280,945 hectares from 286,069 hectares in the corresponding period last year. The area under bajra rose to 172,582 hectares from 168,187 hectares a year ago.
Amongst pulses, acreage under tur rose to 300,875 hectares from 237,275 hectares a year ago, the report showed. Moong acreage fell to 48,910 hectares from 55,161 hectares in the corresponding period last year. The area sown under urad fell slightly to 83,453 hectares from 83,755 hectares a year ago. Total pulses acreage rose to 455,503 hectares from 399,163 hectares a year ago.
The area under groundnut rose to 2.20 million hectares from 1.91 million hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area sown under sesame fell to 41,004 hectares from 49,426 hectares a year ago. Castor acreage rose to 666,209 hectares from 619,952 hectares a year ago. The area sown under soybean fell to 277,514 hectares from 300,789 hectares a year ago. The total area under oilseeds rose to 3.19 million hectares from 2.88 million hectares a year ago.
Cotton acreage fell to 2.08 million hectares from 2.37 million hectares a year ago, the report said. The area under vegetables rose to 264,471 hectares from 263,521 hectares a year ago.
Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. From Jun. 1 to Sept. 29, Gujarat recorded 887.5 millimetres of rainfall, 25?ove the normal for the period, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. End
