MUMBAI – Prices of rice, wheat, and maize were steady in key markets across the country Monday owing to the lack of fresh cues, traders said. Prices of wheat are likely to remain unchanged at current levels with a slightly upward bias in the near term, industry participants and experts said. Meanwhile, prices of maize are likely to fall in the near term once arrivals of the new kharif crop begin, traders said.
Prices of WHEAT at the Vashi market in Navi Mumbai were steady at INR 2,800–INR 2,825 per 100 kg because of the lack of fresh cues, Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader, said. According to industry participants and experts, wheat prices are likely to remain steady in the near term as the availability of higher stocks with the industry and the government is seen offsetting festival demand.
Experts at the Wheat Summit Saturday said they do not see more than a 2.0-2.5% increase in wheat prices from the current levels. "...there is no heat left in wheat," said agriculture expert Rajiv Yadav during a panel discussion. The central pool had 33.3 million tonnes of wheat as of Sept. 1, up over 32% on year. The current wheat stocks are well above the buffer norm of 27.58 million tonnes--operational stock of 24.58 million tonnes and strategic reserve of 3.00 million tonnes--according to data from the Food Corp. of India.
Prices of 1401 and 1121 varieties of basmati RICE were steady at INR 7,500-INR 7,600 per 100 kg and INR 8,000-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, respectively, again because of the lack of fresh cues, Vora said. The price of 5% broken rice in Vashi was unchanged at INR 3,150 per 100 kg, he said. The price of sona masoori rice, a premium non-basmati rice, remained unchanged at INR 5,000 per 100 kg in Bhavanipuram, Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, as there is no demand in the market, Ravi Shankar, a local trader, said. "If prices fall, it will fall slightly in November due to new arrivals or else prices are going to remain unchanged till December," he said.
The price of MAIZE in Davanagere, Karnataka, was unchanged at INR 2,250 per 100 kg, Shiva Kumar, a local trader, said. Arrivals were largely steady at 200–300 bags (1 bag = 60 kg). Kumar expects the price to fall by INR 100–INR 200 per 100 kg from mid-October when the new kharif crop starts arriving in the market. End
