MUMBAI – Mustard and soybean prices were down Friday following Argentina's decision to remove export duties on grains, raising the prospects of higher imports. Later, Argentina was reported to have reintroduced the duty. Meanwhile, groundnut prices were mostly steady.
MUSTARD prices in Kota, Rajasthan, fell by INR 250 to INR 6,500 per 100 kg, local trader Mahesh Sameriya said. Arrivals fell to 5,000 bags (1 bag = 90 kg), from 6,000 bags the previous day. "Traders are actively trading to load off their stock," Sameriya said.
Market participants said mustard is likely to face downward pressure as Argentina, which is the largest exporter of oilseeds, has abolished export duties on all of its grains till Oct. 31. "Oilseed prices are down in all markets and all kinds of oilseeds will remain under pressure because of Argentina," Aniket Mehta, a local trader at Kota market, said.
SOYBEAN prices in Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, fell INR 50 to INR 3,900–INR 4,500 per 100 kg, Narendra Porwal, a local trader, said. Arrivals were steady at 4,200 bags. In Kota, soybean prices were down at INR 4,350 per 100 kg, said Mehta. Arrivals stood at 7,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), same as the previous day. In Dewas, Madhya Pradesh, the prices were steady at INR 4,000–INR 4,400 per 100 kg, a local trader said. Soybean prices are currently low because of cheap imports from Argentina and fresh arrivals in the market, traders said.
In Gondal, Gujarat, prices fell to INR 3,700–INR 4,000, down INR 100 from the previous week, Ashok Virvani, a local trader, said. Arrivals were at 90 bags (1 bag =50 kg), down 36 bags from the previous week, he added.
Soybean prices are likely to remain under pressure, market participants said. "The trajectory will remain highly sensitive to harvest arrivals in October and November, as well as Argentina's policy stance on export levies," Kedia Advisory said in an email to Informist. Argentina is the largest exporter of soybean oil.
Prices of GROUNDNUT in Ratlam were steady at INR 4,100–INR 5,800 per 100 kg, the same as the previous day, Porwal said. Arrivals were at 2,300 bags, up 100 bags from the previous day. "The prices are likely to remain unchanged for this week," a trader said. In Gondal, prices stood at INR 4,000–INR 5,200, up INR 200 from the previous day. Arrivals stood at 1,065 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), down 140 bags from the previous day.
