Andhra Pradesh kharif area down 2% YoY at 2.69 mln ha as of Wed

MUMBAI – Kharif crop acreage in Andhra Pradesh for the week ended Wednesday was 2.69 million hectares, down 2% from 2.74 million hectares for the same period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The state's target area for the ongoing kharif season is 3.45 million hectares, of which nearly 78% has been covered so far.

 

The paddy acreage was up at 1.47 million hectares from 1.36 million hectares last year, the report showed. The area sown under maize was up at 163,000 hectares from 141,000 hectares last year.

 

The total area sown under all pulses was down at 306,000 hectares from 400,000 hectares reported last year. As per the state agriculture department, the area sown under tur was down at 275,000 hectares from 355,000 hectares reported a year ago. The acreage under urad also fell to 24,000 hectares from 32,000 hectares last year while the area sown under moong slipped to 5,000 hectares from 6,000 hectares in the same period last year.

 

The total area sown under all oilseeds fell to 241,000 hectares from 338,000 hectares sown in the previous year, the report showed. Groundnut acreage fell to 192,000 hectares from 287,00 hectares a year ago.

 

Cotton acreage rose to 430,000 hectares from 389,000 hectares in the previous year, according to the report.

 

Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. From Jun. 1– Sept. 26, Andhra Pradesh recorded 533.3 millimetres of rainfall, 6% above the normal 501.0 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department.  End
