MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar were steady in key markets of Uttar Pradesh while prices rose slightly in Maharashtra Friday, said traders. Prices in the resale market of Uttar Pradesh fell by INR 10-INR 15 per 100 kg as demand was sluggish at higher prices, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India.

In Maharashtra, prices rose INR 5 per 100 kg Friday due to higher demand as markets were shut on Thursday, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of Bombay Sugar Merchants Association.

The government has set the domestic sugar sales quota for October at 2.40 million tonnes, the Department of Food and Public Distribution said in a post on social media platform X on Wednesday. The quota for next month is nearly 6% lower than 2.55 million tonnes in October last year, but 2% higher than 2.35 million tonnes in September.

Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Flat at INR 3,940-INR 4,060 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,940-INR 4,060 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Up INR 5 at INR 4,055-INR 4,177 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Up INR 5 at INR 3,905-INR 3,965 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1932 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were up 0.4% at 16.34 cents per pound, tracking gains in crude oil on the NYMEX. Higher crude oil prices encourage diversion of sucrose for ethanol production, decreasing the availability of sugar.  End
