MUMBAI – Prices of rice, wheat, and maize were steady in key markets across the country Friday due to lack of new cues, traders said. Prices of wheat are expected to rise in the near term on expectations of firm festival demand, they said. On the other hand, prices of maize are expected to fall in the short term as the new kharif crops arrive in the market.
Prices of WHEAT in Navi Mumabi's Vashi market were steady at INR 2,800–INR 2,825 per 100 kilograms due to lack of fresh cues, Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader, said. Prices of wheat in Kota, Rajasthan, were largely steady at INR 2,580 per 100 kg, Aniket Mehta, a local trader, said. Arrivals in Kota were unchanged at 12,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). Prices of wheat are likely to rise as the demand is expected to be firm during the festival season, he said.
Food Minister Pralhad Joshi on Wednesday rejected a demand to allow wheat exports, saying this would be assessed only after the new crops arrive next year, according to various media reports. "You are asking for export. We will see. We cannot assure, as our top priority is food security," the Hindu BusinessLine quoted Joshi, as saying.
"Wheat prices and the Indian markets will not be affected by this decision taken by the Food Minister," Vora said.
Prices of MAIZE in Davanagere, Karnataka, were unchanged at INR 2,250 per 100 kg, Shiva Kumar, a local trader, said. Arrivals were largely steady at 200–300 bags (1 bag = 60 kg). Kumar expects prices to fall by INR 100–INR 200 per 100 kg from mid-October when the new kharif crop arrives in markets.
Prices of 1401 and 1121 varieties of basmati RICE were steady at INR 7,500-INR 7,600 per 100 kg and INR 8,000-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, respectively, due to lack of fresh cues, Vora said. Prices of sona masoori rice, a premium variety of non-basmati rice, remained unchanged at INR 5,000 per 100 kg, Ravi Shankar, a local trader, said. The prices of 5% broken rice in Vashi were unchanged at INR 3,150 per 100 kg, Vora said. End
