MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has forecast extremely heavy rainfall over parts of Konkan, Goa, and ghat areas of central Maharashtra on Sunday, under the influence of a trough which runs from a well-marked low pressure area over northwest and central Bay of Bengal to southern Maharashtra coasts across Telangana and north interior Karnataka, the department said.
This weather system is also likely to cause intense rainfall over most parts of western India from Saturday to Monday, it said. The department has issued a red alert for Konkan, Goa, and central Maharashtra for Friday. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning. IMD has also issued red alerts for extremely heavy rainfall over parts of Odisha and Telangana Friday.
The well-marked low pressure area was formed in the early hours of Friday and is likely to move westwards and intensify into a depression off the coasts of south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh during the next 24 hours, the weather department said. Under the influence of this weather system, parts of southern India, including Kerala, north interior Karnataka, and Telangana are likely to experience very heavy rainfall till Saturday, the weather department said. Strong surface winds with speeds reaching up to 40–50 kilometres per hour are very likely over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu during the next five days, it said.
Several parts of east and central India are likely to experience few spells of heavy rainfall till Thursday, the department said. Further, very heavy rainfall is also expected over Odisha Saturday. On Friday, the southwest monsoon withdrew completely from Rajasthan and the entire western Himalayan range including Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. It also withdrew from some more parts of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh, the department said. End
