MUMBAI – The National Co-operative Exports Ltd. has exported more than 1.35 million tonnes of agricultural commodities, valued at INR 54 billion, since its establishment in January 2023 until August 2025, according to a government release. The exported commodities comprised rice, fresh red onions, sugar, baby food, processed food, spices, and tea, the release said.

NCEL has expanded the export of agricultural commodities to 28 countries. A total of 11,034 co-operatives have been granted membership of NCEL. On a turnover of INR 42.83 billion for 2024-25, NCEL achieved a net profit of INR 1.22 billion, the release said.

A national level multi-state co-operative dedicated to exports, NCEL is an umbrella body that represents the entire co-operative sector of India in overseas markets. It has been promoted by Indian Farmers Fertiliser Co-operative Ltd. (IFFCO), Krishak Bharati Co-operative Ltd. (KRIBHCO), National Agricultural Co-operative Marketing Federation of India Ltd. (NAFED), Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF–Amul) and the National Co-operative Development Corp. (NCDC).

NCEL has also signed strategic agreements with 61 importers from Senegal, Indonesia and Nepal, the release said. Among the key targets of NCEL are linking stakeholders to global markets and creating rural jobs through value addition, storage, packaging and transport; as also promoting exports of agricultural and allied commodities.

"The Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah has urged NCEL to explore new export opportunities for sugar from co-operative sugar mills, aromatic rice from Tripura, organic cotton and coarse grains. He also highlighted the potential for partnerships with large companies to export fresh vegetables to Gulf countries and special potato varieties," the release said.

The release also said that an ambitious target of INR 2 trillion worth of exports has been set for NCEL, although it did not specify the timeframe for achieving the target. The minister has directed that exports of all co-operative institutions should be routed through NCEL so that a turnover of about INR 200-INR 300 billion and net profits can flow back to the co-operatives, the release said.  End
