MUMBAI – The government of Indonesia is yet to decide whether to upgrade its biodiesel mandatory programme from B40 to B50 in 2026 as the B50 trial use is yet to be finalised, Gabungan Pengusaha Kelapa Sawit Indonesia, or GAPKI, said in a release. GAPKI is the local name of the Indonesian Palm Oil Entrepreneurs Association, an independent, non-profit organisation based in Jakarta.
According to Indonesia's Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia, although the B40 programme is seen progressing well, the government is yet to decide whether it will be directly upgraded to B50, or to B45 first before B50. He also said that the final decision would be based on the result of B50 trial use, which is still underway. The B50 biodiesel trial has entered its third stage, but Lahadalia declined to specify when the road test would be completed. He emphasised that the government would not rush into a decision without clear technical results from the trial.
Previously, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Director General Eniya Listiani Dewi had confirmed that the B50 programme was still targeted for early 2026, with trials expected to take six to seven months to assess engine durability to the use of a mixture of diesel fuel and biodiesel from palm oil.
Meanwhile, the B50 plan has drawn criticism from the mining sector. The burden caused by the B40 application alone is already heavy for the industry, GAPKI said, citing the Indonesia Mining Association. "According to prevailing laws, the evaluation should have been conducted in every three months, involving all stakeholders along the supply chain to get inputs on its implementation so far," GAPKI quoted Indonesia Mining Association Executive Director Hendra Sinadia as saying.
