MUMBAI – Prices of oilseeds were steady in key markets on Thursday, said traders. Prices of mustard were steady in a few markets but up in other markets due to firm demand from millers. Prices of groundnut and soybean also held steady in key markets. Oilseed prices are expected to rise due to higher demand during the Navratri and Diwali festivals, market participants said.
Prices of MUSTARD in Jaipur, Rajasthan, held steady at INR 7,275-INR 7,300 per 100 kilograms, according to Marudhar Trading Agency. Arrivals in the markets have increased as traders are stocking up for the festival season, market participants said. In Kota, Rajasthan, the prices were up by INR 250 to INR 6,850 from last week, said Mahesh Sameriya, a local trader. Arrivals were 6,000 bags (1 bag = 90 kg), up 1,000 bags from the previous week, Sameriya added. The rise in prices comes on the back of firm demand from millers, the trader added. "Active trading in mustard is going on in the market as the sowing season is coming up," Sameriya said.
SOYBEAN prices in Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, held steady at INR 3,900-INR 4,550 per 100 kg, said Narendra Porwal, a local trader. Arrivals were at 4,200 bags, down 800 bags. The prices are likely to rise as the demand will firm up due to the upcoming Diwali festival, Porwal said. The trader has further said that the mandi would be closed for some days this week due to the ongoing Navratri festival.
GROUNDNUT prices in Ratlam held steady at INR 4,800–INR 5,700, Porwal said. Arrivals rose to 2,200 bags, up 396 bags from Tuesday, the trader added. The millers are stocking up their inventories due to the heavy rains that may come in the next few days, he said. He further added that the prices are likely to go up as the Diwali festival nears. The prices of groundnut in the new variety were down on back of poor quality arrivals caused by heavy rainfall, he added.
The trader has further said that late arrivals for groundnut and soybean are expected as weather conditions fluctuate in Madhya Pradesh. The India Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in Madhya Pradesh.
