MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar were steady in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh due to lower demand at higher prices. Sugar prices were unavailable in Maharashtra as markets were shut, said traders. Mills across Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady as prices have already increased by INR 150 per 100 kg since the beginning of September, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. Prices have risen due to festival season demand, he said.

In Maharashtra, prices of the sweetener were unavailable as markets were shut on account of local labour leaders birth anniversary, said Mukesh Kuvadia.

The government has set the domestic sugar sales quota for October at 2.40 million tonnes, the Department of Food and Public Distribution said in a post on social media platform X on Wednesday. The quota for next month is nearly 6% lower than 2.55 million tonnes in October last year, but 2% higher than 2.35 million tonnes in September.

Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Flat at INR 3,940-INR 4,060 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,940-INR 4,060 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Unavailable in Kolhapur, Maharashtra

--Unavailable in Mumbai, Maharashtra

At 1929 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were down 0.1% at 16.12 cents per pound, tracking losses in crude oil on the NYMEX. Lower crude oil prices discourage diversion of sucrose for ethanol production, increasing the availability of sugar.  End
