NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of turmeric and coriander on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange rose Thursday, while those of jeera fell. Prices of turmeric rose due to festival season demand and reports of crop losses, and those of coriander were up on strong buying interest amid limited supplies. Jeera prices fell due to increased selling pressure after prices rose Wednesday.

The most-active October contract of TURMERIC rose almost 1% to INR 12,364 per 100 kg on a rise in festival season demand and reports of crop losses, analysts said. With the festival season approaching, prices have received some support as demand rose, said SMC Global Securities. Moreover, heavy rainfall in Nanded, Maharashtra, has reportedly damaged nearly 15% of the standing turmeric crop, supporting prices, Kedia Advisory said in a note. However, the rise in prices is likely to be limited due to panic selling in spot markets amid prospects of a good crop this year. Preliminary estimates suggest a 15% increase in sowing this season, Kedia Advisory said.

The most-active October contract of JEERA fell 0.3% to INR 19,350 per 100 kg on subdued buying amid higher arrivals and plenty of stocks. Overall, the long-term view for jeera prices seems weak given the background of bulk availabilities and increased selling pressure at every price hike, SMC Global said in a note. "Any attempt at an upside is likely to face selling pressure at higher levels, reinforcing the prevailing bearish outlook," it said.

The most-active October contract of CORIANDER rose 0.3% at INR 8,360 per 100 kg, supported by strong buying interest amid limited supplies. Seasonal demand coupled with restricted arrivals is likely to sustain the market's firmness in near term, analysts at SMC Global said.
