Telangana kharif area up 3% on yr at 13.31 mln acres as of Wed

MUMBAI - Telangana's kharif crop acreage in the week ended Wednesday was 13.31 million acres (1 acre = 0.4 hectares), up more than 3% on year, as per data released by the state agriculture department. The acreage under all cereals rose over 2% to 7.41 million
acres from 7.25 million acres recorded in the same period last year.
The area sown under paddy rose to 6.73 million acres from 6.68 million acres last year, as per the report. The on-year acreage for maize rose 23% to 644,652 acres from 523,905 acres reported last year. Among pulses, tur acreage was down at 491,690 acres from 520,996 acres last year. The state's moong was also down at 61,696 acres from 68,112 acres from the same period last year.
The total area sown under oilseeds was down at 374,578 acres from 411,892 acres last year, as per the data. Groundnut acreage fell at 10,865 acres from 26,859 a year ago. Soybean was down at 362,120 acres from 380,868 acres from the same period last year.
Cotton acreage rose to 4.59 million acres from 4.48 million acres last year. The area sown under sugarcane rose to 35,641 acres from 12,097 acres. Meanwhile, the on-year acreage for tobacco was down at 3,563 acres from 12,097 acres a year ago, the state agriculture department reported.
As of Wednesday, the water level in reservoirs across Telangana stood at 858.33 thousand million cubic metres, up from 815.16 thousand million cubic metres a year ago. From Jun. 1 to Sept. 24, Telangana recorded 883.5 millimetres of rainfall, 25% above the normal of 707.7 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department.
In the week ended Wednesday, the state received cumulative rainfall of 81.1 millimetres, ranging from 13.70 millimetres in the Wanaparthy district and 106.2 millimetres in the Siddipet district, the state agriculture department said. Paddy is in panicle initiation stage to grain hardening and inter-cultivation operations are in progress across the state, the department said in the report. "Farmers are advised to adopt balanced fertilizer use for a healthy crop and integrated pest management (IPM) practices to manage pests and diseases," the report said. End
