NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of turmeric and jeera rose on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Wednesday, while those of coriander remained largely steady. Prices of turmeric and jeera rose due to short covering after a two-day decline in prices, analysts said.

The most-active October contract of TURMERIC rose 0.3% at INR 12,250 per 100 kilograms due to short-covering after prices fell for two consecutive days, analysts said. Demand also rose ahead of the festival season, SMC Global said. Moreover, a decline in stocks in key producing regions, such as Warangal in Telangana, supported prices, Kedia Advisory said in a note. There have been no arrivals for the past two days, with farmers holding limited inventory, which is keeping market sentiment firm, Kedia Advisory said.

However, the rise in prices is likely to be limited due to panic selling in the spot market amid prospects of a good crop this year. Preliminary estimates suggest a 15% increase in sowing this season, Kedia Advisory said.

The most-active September contract of JEERA rose 0.2% to INR 19,450 per 100 kg due to short-covering, analysts said. The upside in prices is likely to be limited due to huge carryover stocks and persistent selling pressure, SMC Global said. Around 300,000–400,000 bags (1 bag=50 kg) of the spice are expected to be traded by the season's end, leaving a sizeable carry-forward stock of around 1.6 million bags, Kedia Advisory said.

The most-active October contract of CORIANDER was largely steady at INR 8,344 per 100 kg. Seasonal demand coupled with restricted arrivals is expected to sustain the market's firmness in the near term, analysts at SMC Global said.
