MUMBAI – Prices of grains were steady in key spot markets across the country on Wednesday due to lack of fresh cues, traders said. Prices of wheat are likely to fall in the near term as the market expects open market sales to begin at the end of the month, they said. Maize prices are also likely to fall in the short term once arrivals of the new kharif crop begin, traders said.
Prices of WHEAT in Navi Mumbai's Vashi market were steady at INR 2,800–INR 2,825 per 100 kilograms due to lack of cues, wholesale trader Devendra Vora said. Vora does not see any upward or downward movement in wheat prices in the near term. Prices of wheat in Kota, Rajasthan, also remained unchanged at INR 2,570–INR 2,590 per 100 kg, local trader Aniket Mehta said. Arrivals in Kota were at 12,000 bags (1 bag = 50 bags).
Some traders expect the government to start open market sales of wheat by the end of this month. The government usually starts open market sales of wheat in July or August, but this year it has been delayed as prices were steady.
Prices of MAIZE in Davanagere, Karnataka, were unchanged at INR 2,250 per 100 kg, local trader Shiva Kumar said. Arrivals were largely steady at 200–300 bags (1 bag = 60 kg). Kumar expects prices to fall by INR 100–INR 200 per 100 kg from mid-October when the new kharif crop arrives in markets.
Prices of 1401 and 1121 basmati RICE were steady at INR 7,500-INR 7,600 per 100 kg and INR 8,000-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, respectively, due to lack of fresh cues, Vora said. Prices of sona masoori rice, a premium variety of non-basmati rice, remained unchanged at INR 5,000 per 100 kg, local trader Ravi Shankar said. The price of 5% broken rice in Vashi was unchanged at INR 3,150 per 100 kg, Vora said.
Traders expect rice prices to remain steady in the near term. Despite worries about damage to the basmati rice crop in Pujab and Haryana due to heavy rains, prices are likely to be steady as arrivals of paddy have started, Vora said. End
