Maharashtra kharif area dn 1.3% on yr at 14.59 mln ha as of Fri

MUMBAI – The area under various kharif crops in Maharashtra fell 1.3% from a year ago to 14.59 million hectares as on Friday, according to the state's agriculture department. Farmers had sown crops across 14.78 million hectares a year ago.

 

The area under paddy fell slightly to 1.515 million hectares from 1.521 million hectares a year ago. The area under maize rose to 1.45 million hectares from 1.12 million hectares. The total area under all cereals in the state was 3.47 million hectares, up from 3.25 million hectares a year ago.

 

Tur acreage remained largely unchanged at 1.226 million hectares compared to 1.222 million hectares a year ago. The total area under pulses so far was 1.88 million hectares, down from 1.91 million hectares, the report showed.

 

The area under oilseeds fell to 5.12 million hectares from 5.32 million hectares. The acreage of soybean fell to 4.97 million hectares from 5.15 million hectares, and groundnut acreage was at 137,024 hectares, lower than 147,980 hectares a year ago.

 

Cotton acreage dropped to 3.85 million hectares from 4.08 million hectares, while sugarcane acreage increased to 271,463 hectares from 205,934 hectares. As of Wednesday, water levels in Maharashtra's dams were at nearly 90% of their live storage capacity, up from nearly 86% a year ago, according to the state water resources department.  End
