MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar were steady in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, said traders. Mills in Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady despite firm festival demand as they had raised prices by INR 10-INR 15 per 100 kg the previous day, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. Mills have sold most of their stocks and are not in a hurry to meet the sales quota, he added.

Prices in the resales market of Uttar Pradesh rose by INR 10-INR 15 per 100 kg, as there was good demand, Gupta said. In the coming days, prices could rise further, he said.

Prices of the sweetener in Maharashtra were steady as mills are waiting for some retail sales at current price levels, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Demand for festivals from bulk consumers of sugar, such as confectioners, will pick up only from Sept. 25 due to the Navratri festival, Kuvadia said.

Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Flat at INR 3,940-INR 4,060 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,940-INR 4,060 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 4,050-INR 4,172 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,900-INR 3,960 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 2014 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were up over 2% at 15.59 cents per pound, tracking gains in crude oil on the NYMEX. Higher crude oil prices encourage diversion of sucrose for ethanol production, reducing the availability of sugar.  End

US$1 = INR 88.76
