MUMBAI – Prices of wheat were up in Kota, Rajasthan, on strong festival demand, traders said. However, prices of wheat were steady in other key markets. Prices of rice and maize remained unchanged due to lack of fresh cues. Prices of rice are expected to be steady in the near-term while those of maize are expected to fall as the new crop arrives in the markets, traders said.
Prices of WHEAT in Kota rose by INR 20 to INR 2,570–INR 2,590 per 100 kilograms on firm demand, local trader Aniket Mehta said. This was despite arrivals in Kota rising to 13,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) from 8,000 bags on Friday. Markets in Kota were closed on Sunday and Monday for Navratri, because of which the arrivals surged Tuesday, Mehta said.
Prices of wheat in Navi Mumbai's Vashi market were unchanged at INR 2,800–INR 2,825 per 100 kg, wholesale trader Devendra Vora said. Traders expect prices to fall by the end of this month as they expect the government to start open-market sales of wheat.
Prices of 1401 and 1121 basmati RICE were steady at INR 7,500-INR 7,600 per 100 kg and INR 8,000-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, respectively, due to lack of fresh cues, Vora said. Prices of sona masoori rice, a premium variety of non-basmati rice, remained unchanged at INR 5,000 per 100 kg, local trader Ravi Shankar said. The price of 5% broken rice at Vashi in Navi Mumbai was unchanged at INR 3,150 per 100 kg, Vora said. Traders expect rice prices to remain steady in the near-term.
Last week, FCI had offered 287,000 tonnes of rice, of which 159,000 tonnes was offered in Wednesday's auction and 128,000 tonnes on Thursday. However, the offtake remained poor at only 60,000 tonnes--32,000 tonnes on Wednesday and 28,000 tonnes Thursday. So far in 2025-26 (Apr–Mar) as of Thursday, Food Corp. of India has sold 925,000 tonnes of rice through auctions under the open market sale scheme.
Demand for rice has been weak despite good supply nationwide. This has been the case with rice sales in local markets too. Market participants see this situation persisting in the near term due to prospects of higher rice production in the ongoing kharif season amid higher paddy acreage. According to data released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, paddy acreage has risen nearly 2% on year to 43.9 million hectares.
Prices of MAIZE in Davanagere, Karnataka, were unchanged at INR 2,250 per 100 kg, local trader Shiva Kumar said. Arrivals were largely steady at 200–300 bags (1 bag = 60 kg). Kumar expects prices to fall by INR 100–INR 200 per 100 kg from mid-October as the new crop arrives in the markets. The total acreage of maize across the country has risen by about 13% to 9.5 million hectares. End
