Gujarat kharif acreage 8.40 mln ha as on Mon, steady from yr ago

MUMBAI – Area sown under various kharif crops in Gujarat reached 8.40 million hectares as on Monday, largely steady from 8.37 million hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Of the state's normal kharif crop acreage of 8.56 million hectares, which is the average of the past three years, over 98% has been covered so far.

 

Among major cereal crops, acreage of paddy rose to 903,349 hectares from 886,518 hectares a year ago, the report showed. Area sown under maize fell to 280,945 hectares from 285,316 hectares a year ago. Area under bajra rose to 172,580 hectares from 168,187 hectares in the corresponding period a year ago.

 

Under pulses, acreage of moong fell to 48,435 hectares from 55,161 hectares a year ago. The area under tur rose to 297,468 hectares from 231,456 hectares and that under urad fell slightly to 83,453 hectares from 83,753 hectares a year ago.

 

The area under groundnut rose to 2.20 million hectares from 1.91 million hectares a year ago, the report showed. Soybean acreage fell to 277,514 hectares from 300,789 hectares. The area under sesame fell to 41,004 hectares from 49,426 hectares a year ago, while that under castor rose to 662,866 hectares as of Monday from 599,057 hectares during the same period a year ago. The total area under oilseeds rose to 3.18 million hectares from 2.86 million hectares a year ago. 

 

Cotton acreage fell to 2.08 million hectares from 2.37 million hectares a year ago, the report said. The area under vegetables rose to 262,703 hectares from 261,451 hectares.

 

Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. From Jun. 1 to Sept. 22, Gujarat recorded 850.9 millimetres of rainfall, 24?ove the normal for the period, according to data from the India Meteorological Department.  End
