NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of all spices on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange fell Monday. Turmeric prices fell due to a rise in arrivals in spot markets, and jeera was down due to huge carryover stocks and persistent selling pressure. Coriander closed in the red due to subdued demand in spot markets.

The most-active October contract of TURMERIC fell 0.5% INR 12,278 per 100 kilograms as arrivals rose in spot markets, SMC Global said in a note. The fall comes amid poor festival season demand and lower quality arrivals, they said. However, prices are likely to find support at current levels amid expectations of a revival in festival season demand, which is yet to gain momentum, the brokerage said. The market is also keeping an eye on the weather, which will play a critical role in determining the direction of prices, with the forecast of above-normal rainfall in September in key growing regions, SMC Global said.

The most-active October contract of JEERA fell 0.1% to INR 19,530 per 100 kg on abundant carryover stocks and persistent selling pressure, analysts said. "Ample carryover stocks are still weighing on the sentiment while demand continues to be tepid," SMC Global said. Farmers still hold nearly 2 million bags of cumin, but only 300,000–400,000 bags are expected to be traded before the season closes, leaving a substantial carryforward stock of about 1.6 million bags, Kedia Advisory said in a statement.

The most-active October contract of CORIANDER was down 0.6% at INR 8,350 per 100 kg due to subdued demand in spot markets, analysts said. However, prices are likely to rise in the near term on anticipated seasonal demand along with restricted arrivals, which will keep the market firm, SMC Global said.
