MUMBAI – Prices of pulses were unavailable on Monday as all markets were shut on the account of Navratri and Agrasen Jayanti, traders said. Most markets will reopen on Tuesday, they said.

CHANA prices were unavailable in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, as the market was shut for Agrasen Jayanti, said Kaliash Kakani, a local trader. Chana prices were also unavailable in Rajasthan's Kota as the market was shut on account of Navratri, local trader Aniket Mehta said.

Prices of chana are expected to stay under pressure due to availability of ample stock and subdued buying, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in a report released Sunday. Lower forward offers of Australian chana, and ongoing imports of cheaper yellow peas will weigh on prices, it said.

However, chana prices may get short-term support as demand for chana dal and chana flour is likely to increase now after Pitrupaksha, a time when people generally stop consuming chickpeas, traders said. Demand for chana seed is also likely to increase in October for rabi sowing, which will also support prices of the legume.

TUR and MOONG prices were unavailable in Solapur, Maharashtra, as the market was shut on account of Navratri, said Mukesh Sanklecha, a local trader. The association expects tur prices to remain weak due to falling import prices from Burma. Weak domestic demand, new arrivals from African countries starting next month, and availability of cheaper substitutes are also likely to weigh on tur prices, it added.

Although there were reports of tur crop loss in major tur producers Maharashtra and Karnataka, and "speculation" about the government imposing import duty on yellow peas, prices of tur remained low. These factors have failed to revive buying interest, the association said.  End
