MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra were steady on Friday, said traders. In Uttar Pradesh, demand was down at increased price levels, they said.

Mills in Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady as there was little demand at higher price levels, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. Mills had increased prices by INR 40-INR 50 per 100 kg as there was good festival demand and also as stocks of sugar with mills are almost ending. However, prices could not sustain at those levels, Gupta said.

Prices of the sweetener in Maharashtra were steady as mills are waiting for some retail sales at current price levels, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Demand for festivals from bulk consumers of sugar such as confectioners will pick up only from Sept. 25 due to the Navratri festival, Kuvadia said.

Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Flat at INR 3,920-INR 4,050 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,940-INR 4,060 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 4,050-INR 4,172 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,900-INR 3,960 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 2028 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were steady at 15.33 cents per pound.  End

US$1 = INR 88.09
