MUMBAI – Prices of wheat in Kota, Rajasthan, rose Friday on firm demand ahead of the festival season, but were steady in other key markets, traders said. Prices of rice and maize were steady in key markets across the country. Traders expect prices of wheat to fall in the near term as the government is likely to start open market sales from the end of September.
Prices of WHEAT in Kota rose by INR 10-INR 15 to INR 2,570–INR 2,580 per 100 kg on firm demand ahead of the festival season, local trader Aniket Mehta said. Arrivals in Kota fell to 8,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) from 12,000 bags due to low prices. Prices of wheat in Navi Mumbai's Vashi market were unchanged at INR 2,800-INR 2,825 per 100 kg, wholesale trader Devendra Vora said.
Traders expect the government to start the sales of wheat by the end of this month. The government usually starts the open market sales of wheat in July or August, but this year it was delayed as prices are steady.
The International Grains Council has raised its estimate for global wheat production for the year 2025-26 to 819 million tonnes from 811 million tonnes the previous month. This is on the back of expected higher wheat production in Australia and Russia. The council has raised its projection for Australian wheat output by 3.3 million tonnes and that of Russia by 1.3 million tonnes from the previous month.
Prices of MAIZE in Davanagere, Karnataka, were unchanged at INR 2,250 per 100 kg, local trader Shiva Kumar said. Arrivals were also largely steady at 150–200 bags (1 bag = 60 kg). Kumar expects prices to fall from mid-October due to start of new crop arrivals.
The council has raised its global maize consumption forecast for the year by 1 million tonnes to 1,286 million tonnes. However, the council has lowered its estimate for global maize production to 1,297 million tonnes from 1,299 million tonnes.
Prices of 1401 and 1121 basmati RICE were steady at INR 7,500-INR 7,600 per 100 kg and INR 8,000-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, respectively, because of lack of fresh cues. Prices are expected to be steady in the near term as the arrival of the new crop has begun, they said. The price of 5% broken rice at Vashi was unchanged at INR 3,150 per 100 kg, Vora said. The price of sona masoori rice, a non-basmati premium variety, was steady at INR 5,200 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, local trader Ravi Shankar said.
Global rice production estimate for the year remains unchanged at 544 million tonnes from the previous month's estimate while global consumption has been slightly lowered to 540 million tonnes from 541 million tonnes, the council said. End
