MUMBAI - The International Grains Council has raised its global food grain output estimate for 2025-26 by 8 million tonnes to 2,412 million tonnes in September. This increase in global production is due to the upward revision for wheat and barley, the council said in its grain market report released Thursday.
The council has also raised its estimate for food grain opening stocks for the year to nearly 589 million tonnes in September from over 584 million tonnes in August. This, along with record production of food grain, has pushed the total supply above 3,000 million tonnes for the first time ever, according to the report.
Global wheat production estimate for the year has been raised to 819 million tonnes from 811 million tonnes the previous month. This is on back of expected higher wheat production in Australia and Russia. The council has raised its view for Australian wheat output by 3.3 million tonnes and that of Russia by 1.3 million tonnes from the previous month.
Grain consumption in 2025-26 is expected at 2,395 million tonnes, up from 2,391 million tonnes estimated in August. This rise is mostly due to an uprated feed estimate for wheat and maize. The estimate for global wheat consumption is at 819 million tonnes, up from 816 million tonnes estimated in August.
Similarly, the council has raised global maize consumption view for the year by 1 million tonnes to 1,286 million tonnes in September. However, the council has lowered its estimate for global maize production to 1,297 million tonnes from 1,299 million tonnes the previous month.
The grains council has raised its carryover stock for global food grains in 2025-26 by 9 million tonnes to 606 million tonnes, considering larger than previously estimated opening stocks. The council has raised its forecast slightly for global grain trade in 2025-26 to 438 million tonnes, from 437 million tonnes in August, the report said.
Global rice production estimate for the year is kept unchanged at 544 million tonnes from the previous month while global consumption has been slightly lowered to 540 million tonnes from 541 million tonnes, the report said.
World soybean production for the year has been cut to 429 million tonnes from 430 million tonnes estimated in the previous month. Global consumption in 2025-26 is expected to rise to 431 million tonnes from 430 million tonnes the previous month. Amid recent larger than anticipated shipments from South American origins, soybean trade is projected at 185 million tonnes from 184 million tonnes in the previous month. End
