Andhra Pradesh kharif area up 1% on yr at 2.63 mln ha as of Wed

MUMBAI – Kharif crop acreage in Andhra Pradesh for the week ended Wednesday stood at 2.63 million hectares, up nearly 1% from 2.59 million hectares recorded in the same period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The state's target area for the ongoing kharif season is 3.45 million hectares, of which 76% has been covered so far, as per the report.
The on-year paddy acreage rose to 1.44 million hectares, up from 1.30 million hectares last year. The area sown under maize also rose to 158,000 hectares from 131,000 hectares reported the previous year during the same period, the data showed.
Under pulses, the area sown under tur was down at 260,000 hectares from 313,000 hectares reported a year ago. The on-year urad acreage fell to 22,000 hectares from 27,000 hectares reported last year, while moong acreage also slipped to 5,000 hectares from 6,000 hectares in the same period last year. The total area sown under all pulses was down at 289,000 hectares from 352,000 hectares reported last year, the data showed.
The total oilseeds acreage was down at 234,000 hectares from 316,000 hectares last year. The on-year area under groundnut slipped to 186,000 hectares from 269,000 hectares a year ago, the report showed.
Meanwhile, cotton acreage rose to 422,000 hectares from 387,000 hectares in the previous year, according to the report.
Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. From Jun. 1–Sept. 18, Andhra Pradesh recorded 483.1 millimetres of rainfall, 6% above the normal 454.4 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. End
