MUMBAI – India's natural gas production continued its negative trend, with output declining 3.3% on year to 2.93 billion cubic meters in July, according to the Gas Exporting Countries Forum. The decline was driven by a reduction in offshore gas output, which constitutes 72% of Indian production, along with reduced production from the onshore Rajasthan field. India's natural gas production in Jan–Jul declined 3.3% on year to 20.3 billion cubic meters, the intergovernmental organisation comprising the world's leading gas exporters said in its monthly report for September.

Global gas production in July rose 2.6% on year to 358 billion cubic meters. All gas-producing regions, except Europe, witnessed positive production growth, with North America leading the growth. Europe recorded a decline in output driven by lower gas production in Norway, the report said.

India's natural gas consumption in July declined 1.9% on-year to 6 billion cubic meters, marking the seventh straight month of on-year contraction. The fertiliser industry was the largest consumer of natural gas during the month, accounting for 29% of total demand, followed by city gas distribution at 23%, power generation at 12%, and refining at 7%, according to the report.

India's residential pipeline natural gas demand is projected to rise to 3.4 million tonnes by 2030 from 979,000 tonnes in 2024, the forum said, citing the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell. Total city gas demand is expected to rise to 25.7 million tonnes from 11.5 million tonnes, increasing the share of gas in the energy mix to 15%.

Aggregate gas consumption in some of the major gas-consuming countries, which account for 75% of global gas demand, increased 1.7% on year to 2.08 trillion cubic meters in the first seven months of 2025. The European Union, the UK, and North America recorded growth while Asia showed a decline, the report said.  End
