MUMBAI – The price of maize in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, fell slightly Thursday with arrivals of the new crop beginning, traders said. Prices of rice were steady in key markets across the country. Prices of wheat rose slightly in Indore but were steady in other key markets, traders said. They expect prices of wheat to fall in the near term with the government likely to start open market sales from the end of this month.
The price of MAIZE in Indore fell slightly to INR 2,050 per 100 kilograms, local trader Gaurav Kochar said. The price of maize in Davanagere in Karnataka remained unchanged at INR 2,250 per 100 kg. Arrivals were unchanged at 200–300 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), local trader Shiva Kumar said. He said maize prices are likely to fall from mid-October once the new crop starts arriving at the market. In other parts of Karnataka, prices will fall in the next 10–15 days with the start of new crop arrivals, he said.
Prices of WHEAT in Navi Mumbai's Vashi market remained unchanged at INR 2,800–INR 2,825 per 100 kg due to the lack of new cues. The price of wheat in Kota, Rajasthan, was also steady at INR 2,250 per 100 kg. Arrivals in Kota fell to 12,000 bags from 15,000 bags Wednesday with some farmers preferring to keep away given the low price. The price of wheat in Kota is currently less than the minimum support price of INR 2,425 per 100 kg set for the rabi marketing year 2025-26 (Apr-Mar).
However, some market participants still expect the government to start open market sales of wheat by the end of this month, which is why they are keen to offload their stock at the current price. The government has set a reserve price of INR 2,550 per 100 kg for open market sales in 2025-26. The government usually starts selling wheat in the domestic market in July or August, but this year the sales have been delayed because open market prices have been stable.
Prices of 1401 and 1121 basmati RICE were steady at INR 7,500-INR 7,600 per 100 kg and INR 8,000-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, respectively, because of the lack of new cues. Traders said damage to the standing crop in the basmati-producing states on account of the recent heavy rains has been limited. Prices are expected to be steady in the near term as the arrival of the new crop has begun, they said.
The price of 5% broken rice at Vashi was unchanged at INR 3,150 per 100 kg, Vora said. The price of sona masoori rice, a non-basmati premium variety, was steady at INR 5,200 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, local trader Ravi Shankar said. End
