MUMBAI – Prices of all pulses were steady in key spot markets across the country Thursday. Prices of chana were steady as there was some demand for the legume but not enough to lift prices, traders said. Festival demand could raise prices in the near term, they added. Prices of tur were steady due to lack of cues while prices of masur were unchanged as demand for the legume matched its supply, they said.
CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,925-INR 5,950 per 100 kg, said Dinesh Mangal, a local trader. Millers are making limited need-based purchases, which are not substantial enough to raise prices, he said. Prices of chana usually rise this time of the year due to firm festival demand for chana dal, or processed chana, and besan, but the upcoming shipments of Australian chana are weighing on prices, he said. Millers are making forward deals for Australian chana as it is cheaper and of better quality than the readily-available domestic variety, he said.
However, even with the availability of Australian chana, which is likely to arrive in the country between October and December, prices are unlikely to fall sharply until after Diwali, Mangal said. "It's not like there is no good festival demand this year--in fact, we expect firmer demand as Diwali approaches," he said. "So prices of local chana will be range-bound or may see a small rise because millers and traders will keep buying it to fulfil immediate demand. The amount they are buying from Australia is not going to be enough to fulfil festival demand," he said.
However, after Diwali, prices of chana are likely to decline as imports from Australia will keep coming into the country till December, Mangal said.
Prices of chana in Delhi were steady at INR 5,950-INR 5,975 per 100 kg, traders said.
TUR prices in Solapur, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 6,450-INR 6,550 per 100 kg, said Rahul Srinivas, a local trader. About four to five trucks with 20,000-25,000 kg each arrived in the market, he said. Prices are steady due to lack of cues, he said. Market activity has been subdued in Solapur due to heavy rainfall in the region, he said. Neither buyers nor sellers are stepping out due to the unfavourable weather, he said.
Though incessant rainfall has been battering the Solapur belt, along with other interior regions of Maharashtra, for a few days now, Srinivas does not expect major crop losses. "There will be 10–15?mage in the crops, but that is a given during the monsoon. Till now, I don't see big damage," he said. "We will be worried if such rains continue for the rest of the month," he said. Maharashtra is the top tur-producing state in the country.
Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 6,750-INR 6,850 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.
MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 6,075-INR 6,100 per 100 kg, Mangal said. Prices are steady as the demand for masur is on par with its supply, he said. Though the lack of arrivals could have raised prices, the government has been offloading small batches of the legume in markets, preventing an uptrend in prices, he said. Prices could only fall if the government decided to issue tenders for offloading larger quantities of masur, he said.
Prices of choti variety of masur at Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, remained steady at INR 5,800-INR 6,150 per 100 kg, the association said. Prices of the moti variety of masur in Lalitpur were also steady at INR 7,500-INR 8,000 per 100 kg. End
