Telangana kharif area up 3% on yr at 13.27 mln acres as of Wed

MUMBAI – Telangana's kharif crop acreage in the week-ended Wednesday was 13.27 million acres (1 acre = 0.4 hectares), up more than 3% on year, as per data released by the state agriculture department. The acreage under major grains rose over 19% to 678,536 acres from 569,305 acres recorded in the same period last year.
The area sown under paddy was marginally up at 6.70 million acres from 6.68 million acres last year, as per the report. The on-year acreage for maize also rose to 641,844 acres from 523,905 acres reported a year ago.
Among pulses, tur acreage was down at 491,633 acres from 520,996 acres last year. The state's moong acreage also fell to 61,689 acres from 68,112 acres last year. The total area sown under pulses slipped to 580,602 acres from 616,027 acres from the same period last year.
The total area sown under oilseeds was also down at 374,474 acres from 411,892 last year, as per the data. Groundnut acreage fell to 10,818 acres from 26,859 acres a year ago. The on-year acreage for soybean stood at 362,119 acres, down from 380,868 acres the previous year.
Cotton acreage rose to 4.59 million acres from 4.47 million acres last year. The area sown under sugarcane was also up at 34,223 acres from 12,097 acres a year ago. Meanwhile, the on-year acreage for tobacco was down at 3,563 acres from 12,097 acres a year ago, the state agriculture department reported.
As of Wednesday, the water level in reservoirs across Telangana stood at 882.93 thousand million cubic metres, up from 845.55 thousand million cubic metres a year ago. From Jun. 1 to Sep. 17, Telangana recorded 824.5 millimetres of rainfall, 24?ove the normal of 664.1 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department.
In the week ended Wednesday, the state received cumulative rainfall of 81.8 millimetres, ranging from 17.3 millimetres in the Suryapet district to 137.2 millimetres in the Adilabad district, the state agriculture department said. Currently, the crops sown are at the vegetative growth stage to reproductive stage. As per the weather department's forecast, some regions in the state may experience light to moderate rainfall and thundershowers. "Farmers are advised to adopt balanced fertiliser use for a healthy crop and integrated pest management practices to manage pests and diseases," the report said. End
