MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar were steady in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, said traders. In the coming days, demand is likely to increase due to festivals starting from this month end, they said.
Mills in Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady as there was need-based demand at the existing price levels, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. In the resale market too, prices were steady as demand did not pick up at higher rates, said Gupta. In the resale market in Uttar Pradesh, prices were by INR 20-INR 25 per 100 kg the previous day on anticipation of firm demand.
Prices of the sweetener in Maharashtra were steady as mills are waiting for some retail sales to happen at the current price levels, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Demand for festivals from bulk consumers of sugar such as confectioneries will only pick up from Sept. 25 due to the Navratri festival, Kuvadia added.
Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Flat at INR 3,890-INR 4,010 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,890-INR 4,010 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 4,050-INR 4,172 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Flat at INR 3,900-INR 3,960 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 2037 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were down 1.5% at 15.66 cents per pound tracking fall in crude oil prices on the NYMEX. Lower crude oil prices discourage diversion of sucrose for ethanol production, increasing the availability of sugar. End
