Close higher Wed; caution on US FOMC caps gain

MUMBAI – The benchmark indices closed higher Wednesday retaining most of their intraday gains. However, both moved in a thin range with minimal gains on caution ahead of the outcome of the US Federal Open Market Committee meeting later in the day. The resumption of negotiations between India and the US to seal a trade deal also lifted sentiment.
Wednesday, the Nifty 50 settled at 25330.25 points, up 91.15 points or 0.4%. The BSE Sensex ended at 82693.71 points, up 313.02 points or 0.4%. Both indices maintained their gains with the Nifty 50 moving in a tight range of just over 70 points after opening gap-up. The rise in the 50-stock index was supported by banking and financial services stocks.
The resumption of India-US trade talks, with both countries agreeing to intensify efforts for an early conclusion of the Bilateral Trade Agreement that was first proposed in February, improved the market's sentiment. Wednesday, US President Donald Trump said he had a "wonderful phone call" with his "friend", Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The broader market indices came off the day's highs but still closed in positive territory. The Nifty Smallcap 50, Smallcap 100, and Smallcap 250 indices rose 0.5-0.8%. Bucking the trend, the Nifty Midcap 50 closed marginally down. The fear indicator, India VIX, closed 0.2% lower at 10.2475, The index fell for the second session. It has fallen nearly 13% so far this month, indicating easing near-term nervousness in the market.
Both the benchmark indices closed higher for the second session with the banking and financial services sector leading the gains. The rise in banking and financial services stocks was driven by optimism over the US Federal Reserve cutting the Fed funds rate. The CME FedWatch tool suggested a 96.1% probability of the Fed reducing its key interest rate by 25 basis points. The Nifty PSU Bank closed 2.6% higher and was the top-gaining sectoral index. All constituents in the index ended higher.
Defence stocks also powered the gains in the market, with the Nifty India Defence ending 2% higher. All stocks in the index rose Wednesday, with the index closing higher for the fourth straight session. Cochin Shipyard rose nearly 4% and was among the top gainers in the Nifty 200. DCM Shriram and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers ended the session up nearly 13% and 7%, respectively. They were the top gainers in the Nifty 500.
Nomura Global Markets Research initiated coverage on Prestige Estates Projects with a "buy" rating and a target price of INR 1,900. This implies a potential upside of 15% from the stock's closing price Wednesday. The brokerage is positive on the company's pan-India growth strategy compared to its peers. The stock closed 1.8% higher.
Tata Consumer Products rose over 4% and was the top gainer in the Nifty 50 after Informist reported that the company aims to reclaim top spot in tea sales by volume from competitor Hindustan Unilever. Media reports said the company has announced price reductions across most of its tea brands, driven by a decline in bulk tea prices.
Bharat Electronics gained 2.3% to end at an over-two-month high of INR 412.20 after the company bagged orders worth INR 7.12 billion this month so far. These orders pertain to information technology infrastructure and cybersecurity solutions, blockchain solutions platform, communications equipment, spares, and services. The stock was among the top three gainers in the Nifty 50.
Shares of State Bank of India rose over 3% and were among the biggest gainers in the 50-stock index. The bank sold 13.19% stake in YES Bank Ltd. to Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp. for INR 88.89 billion. It offloaded 4.13 billion shares of the bank at INR 21.50 per equity share.
Shares of Multi Commodity Exchange of India rose nearly 4?ter Securities and Exchange Board of India Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey said the regulator will consult the government on widening participation in commodity derivatives. Pandey said SEBI plans to allow banks and pension funds to participate in commodity trading, according to media reports.
Gujarat Fluorochemicals came off the day's low after falling over 4% following a large deal at a discount to the stock's previous closing price. The stock eventually closed marginally lower, ending the red for the third straight session.
Dev Accelerator closed at the 5% upper circuit of INR 64.05. The stock hit its upper circuit instantly after listing at the issue price of INR 61. Urban Co. closed 62% higher after listing at INR 162.25, a premium of 58% to its issue price of INR 103 per share. Shringar House of Mangalsutra gained 12?ter listing at INR 188.50 on the NSE, a premium of 14% to its issue price of INR 165 per share.
