MUMBAI – Prices of chana and masur remained steady while tur saw a mixed trend across key spot markets in the country Wednesday, traders said. Chana prices held steady amid some demand for the legume, and masur remained stable as supply matched demand. Tur prices declined in some markets due to weak demand and the availability of cheaper imports, they added.
CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,975-INR 6,000 per 100 kilograms, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Though there is some demand for the legume, it is not enough to boost prices, he said. Demand for chana is tepid even ahead of Navratri, when the market had expected a substantial rise, he said.
Prices could rise due to demand before Diwali, but only by INR 100-INR 200 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Ample availability of domestic stocks and imports are preventing a steep rise in prices, which is usually seen during the festive season, he said. Forward deals being made for the shipments of chana from Australia, which will arrive in the country between October and December, and are cheaper than the domestic variety.
Prices of chana in Delhi were steady at INR 5,950-INR 5,975 per 100 kg, traders said.
TUR prices in Akola, Maharashtra, fell by INR 25 from Tuesday to INR 6,675-INR 6,700 per 100 kg, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. "Demand for tur is not there at all," he said, adding the availability of cheaper imports from African countries is also weighing on prices.
Prices could find some support in the medium term due to rising concern over crop loss in Maharashtra and Karnataka, the top tur-producing states, Kedia said. "There is more damage to the crop in Karnataka, but if such heavy rainfall continuea in Maharashtra, especially in the Vidarbha area, then we will also see a worrisome crop loss," he said.
The interior regions of Maharashtra have been battered by spells of heavy to very heavy rainfall since the past few weeks. Light to moderate rainfall with a few spells of heavy rainfall is likely to continue over the same regions till Thursday, according to the India Meteorological Department.
Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 6,750-INR 6,850 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.
MASUR prices in Indore held steady at INR 6,075-INR 6,100 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices are steady as demand for the legume is on a par with its supply. However, Kochar expects demand to dip in the near term as millers have already stocked up on enough quantity of the legume, which could weigh on prices.
Prices of choti variety of masur at Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, remained steady at INR 5,800-INR 6,150 per 100 kg, the association said. Prices of the moti variety of masur in Lalitpur were also steady at INR 7,500-INR 8,000 per 100 kg. End
