MUMBAI – Prices of grains were steady in spot key markets across the country on Wednesday due to a lack of fresh cues, traders said. Prices of wheat are likely to fall in the near term on news that the government is likely to start open market sales and maize on new arrivals of maize, they said.

Prices of WHEAT in Navi Mumbai's Vashi were steady at INR 2,800–INR 2,825 per 100 kilograms, wholesale trader Devendra Vora said. The cut in stock limits for traders, combined with news about the open market sales, will weigh on prices, Vora said. Last week, Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra said the government has allocated 3.0 million tonnes of wheat for open market sales, which are expected to begin from the end of this month. The sale of wheat in the open market typically begins in July, but was delayed this year due to steady prices.

Wheat prices at Kota in Rajasthan were also steady at INR 2,250 due to a lack of new cues, traders said. The arrivals in the market fell to 15,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) from 18,000 the previous day, Mehta said, adding that arrivals are still at par with demand. Traders said there are currently stocks with market participants, and the continuous arrivals in local markets are limiting any potential upside in prices.

Prices of 1401 and 1121 basmati RICE remained unchanged at INR 7,500-INR 7,600 per 100 kg and INR 8,000-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, respectively. The price of 5% broken rice at Vashi was unchanged at INR 3,150 per 100 kg, Vora said. The price of sona masoori rice, a non-basmati premium variety, was steady at INR 5,200 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Andhra Pradesh's Vijayawada, local trader Ravi Shankar said.

Despite worries about damage to the basmati rice crop in Punjab and Haryana due to heavy downpour, prices are likely to be steady in the near term as the arrival of paddy has started, Vora said. He also added that there is only limited damage to the crop due to heavy rainfall.

Prices of MAIZE in Karnataka's Davanagere were steady at INR 2,250 per 100 kg. Arrivals in Davanagere were also steady at 200–300 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), local trader Shiva Kumar said. Kumar expects prices to fall by INR 100-INR 200 after the new arrivals start.  End
