Maharashtra kharif area dn 1% on yr at 14.58 mln ha as of Fri

MUMBAI – Farmers in Maharashtra have planted kharif crops on 14.58 million hectares as of Friday, down more than 1% from last year, according to the state's agriculture department. Acreage under kharif crops was 14.77 million hectares during the same period in the previous year.
The area under paddy fell to 1.51 million hectares from 1.52 million hectares last year. Area sown under maize was 1.45 million hectares, up nearly 30% from 1.12 million hectares in the corresponding year. The total area under all cereals in the state was 3.47 million hectares, up from 3.25 million hectares last year.
Tur acreage rose slightly to 1.223 million hectares from 1.222 million hectares a year ago. The total area under all pulses fell to 1.88 million hectares, down from 1.92 million hectares last year, the report said.
Farmers reduced the area under oilseeds to 5.13 million hectares from 5.32 million hectares last year. The acreage under soybean fell to 4.97 million hectares from 5.15 million hectares and the area under groundnut fell to 137,108 hectares from 147,980 hectares in the corresponding year.
Cotton acreage contracted to 3.84 million hectares from 4.08 million hectares, while sugarcane acreage increased to 261,009 hectares from 204,224 hectares last year.
As of Wednesday, water levels in Maharashtra's dams were at 88.42 % of their live storage capacities, up from 84.22% last year, according to the state water resources department. End
