Gujarat kharif acreage steady on yr at 8.36 mln ha as on Monday

MUMBAI – Sowing of kharif crops in Gujarat reached 8.36 million hectares as on Monday, largely steady compared to 8.33 million hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Of the state's normal kharif crop acreage of 8.56 million hectares, which is the average of the past three years, nearly 98% has been covered so far. 

 

Under major cereal crops, paddy acreage rose to 903,144 hectares from 886,160 hectares a year ago, the report showed. Maize acreage fell to 280,943 hectares from 285,316 hectares, while the area under bajra rose to 172,563 hectares from 168,187 hectares.

 

Under pulses, moong acreage fell to 48,389 hectares from 55,159 hectares a year ago. The area under tur rose to 294,756 hectares from 228,826 hectares and that under urad fell slightly to 83,353 hectares from 83,671 hectares. 

 

The area under groundnut rose to 2.20 million hectares from 1.90 million hectares a year ago, the report said. Soybean acreage fell to 277,508 hectares from 300,765 hectares. The area under sesame fell to 41,004 hectares from 49,651 hectares a year ago, while that under castor rose to 645,004 hectares from 579,611 hectares. The total area under oilseeds rose to 3.17 million hectares from 2.84 million hectares a year ago. 

 

Cotton acreage fell to 2.08 million hectares from 2.37 million hectares a year ago, the report said. The area under vegetables rose to 260,951 hectares from 256,344 hectares. 

 

Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. From Jun. 1 to Sept. 16, Gujarat recorded 837.1 millimetres of rainfall, 26% above the normal for the period, according to data from the India Meteorological Department.  End
